چکیده

Following the discovery of a black hole (BH) with a mass of 10–10 M in a starburst galaxy M82, we study formation of such a BH via successive merging of stellar-mass BHs within a star cluster. The merging has a runaway characteristic. This is because massive BHs sink into the cluster core and have a high number density, and because the merging probability is higher for more massive BHs. We use the Smoluchowski equation to study analytically the evolution of the BH mass distribution. Under favorable conditions, which are expected for some star clusters in starburst galaxies, the timescale of the runaway merging is at most of order 10 yr. This is short enough to account for the presence of a BH heavier than 10 M in an ongoing starburst region. Subject headings: black hole physics — galaxies: starburst — galaxies: star clusters

Stellar Collisions and Black Hole Formation in Dense Star Clusters

Close encounters and physical collisions between stars in young dense clusters may lead to the formation of very massive stars and black holes via runaway merging. We examine critically some details of this process, using N-body simulations and simple analytical estimates to place limits on the cluster parameters for which it expected to occur. For small clusters, the mass of the runaway is eff...

Black Holes in Massive Star Clusters

Close encounters and physical collisions between stars in young dense clusters can result in new channels for stellar evolution, and may lead to the formation of very massive stars and black holes via runaway merging. We present some details of this process, using the results of N-body simulations and simple analytical estimates to place limits on the cluster parameters for which it expected to...

The runaway instability of thick discs around black holes . II . Non constant angular momentum discs

We present results from a comprehensive number of relativistic, time-dependent, axisymmetric simulations of the runaway instability of non-constant angular momentum thick discs around black holes. This second paper in the series extends earlier results where only constant angular momentum discs were considered. All relevant aspects of the theory of stationary thick discs around rotating black h...

On the stability of thick accretion disks around black holes

Discerning the likelihood of the so-called runaway instability of thick accretion disks orbiting black holes is an important issue for most models of cosmic gamma-ray bursts. To this aim we investigate this phenomenon by means of time-dependent, hydrodynamical simulations of black hole plus torus systems in general relativity. The evolution of the central black hole is assumed to be that of a s...

The runaway instability of thick discs around black holes . I . The constant angular momentum case

We present results from a numerical study of the runaway instability of thick discs around black holes. This instability is an important issue for most models of cosmic gamma-ray bursts, where the central engine responsible for the initial energy release is such a system consisting of a thick disc surrounding a black hole. We have carried out a comprehensive number of time-dependent simulations...
